A local couple purchased a historic church in the charming, walkable borough of Kennett Square in the Philadelphia countryside intending to convert it into a residence. The couple had worked with Distinctive Homes in the past and was familiar with our work in downtown Kennett Square, so decided to hire us to undertake the historic renovations. All the members of our Distinctive Homes team have at least 10 to 20 years of experience, which ensures exceptional craftsmanship and professionalism.
Because the church is a historic structure, the project included a historic review. The Kennett Square Township is especially concerned with identifying and preserving historical sites and promoting an awareness of the community’s history. Our Distinctive Homes team created a design that held to the structure’s roots. Throughout the project, we made design modifications as needed to meet the couple’s budget. Because they lived nearby, they were hands-on during the project, visiting the site as often as daily to see the progress and interact with our crew.
One of the most exciting aspects of the transformation of this historic building was the new wine cellar that we created in the basement, which was in the original foundation. Because it was naturally cool, it was well-suited as a location to store spirits of all types.
Throughout the entire project, the Distinctive Home’s team used many of the original doors and molding per the client’s request, including the original bell located in the bell tower at the back of the building. We also used or repointed almost all the building’s gorgeous, original stone. Among the only challenges throughout the project was the small lot, because the structure is in the center of the Kennett Square Historic District, but our crew was able to work around any issues that arose.
